LUIS CARBALLO

Hiatuses and Controversies

Opening: 16 May, 6.00 pm

16 May – 2 June 2026

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” Friedrich

Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

The visual compositions of Luís Carballo are embedded within an ongoing investigation Into the limits of photography as both a language and a device of representation. Rooted in urban observation, the artist’s practice progressively shifts towards territories of rupture and inquiry, where the image ceases to function merely as a record and instead becomes an expanded material form.

In this new exhibition, Luís Carballo further pushes this trajectory by questioning the very possibility of photography’s continuity. Through the conversion of photographic images Into three-dimensional graphic drawing, he proposes gestures of discontinuity that suspend immediate legibility.

This formal interruption resonates with a broader global context marked by uncertainty and tension. In a time shaped by the expansion of war, energy instability, and a pervasive anxiety that fragments everyday life, the artistic gesture of pausing and cutting assumes a critical dimension. The works presented echo this state of global paralysis, where normality is replaced by hiatuses and controversies. Rather than offering resolution, these images invite the discovery of alternative strata, depending on the viewer’s perspective.

The works once again demonstrate Luís’s ability to articulate geometry, perspective and dimension—now displaced beyond the photographic field. Their tridimensionality introduces dynamic layers of interpretation that invite viewer interaction. This new series continues the artist’s characteristic exploration of pattern, proposing a visual pathway that oscillates between aesthetic balance and emotional tension.

Lived experience—joys, sorrows, fulfilments and frustrations—structures the arrangement of acrylic elements. Colour and form trace intersections, affections and the resilience of human feeling.

The Dance Of Becoming

MARIA WHO

Each canvas is a continuous conversation between layers. In her practice, she paints with oil paint and oil bars, using a palette knife and a brush, in an intuitive and emotional approach. For Maria, colours are words; she believes that colour is the language of Nature in constant transformation. She gives us what escapes: reflections on water, shifting landscapes, the subtle interval between two thoughts.

Void

IVAN PRIETO

Iván creates an unsettling world in which we empathise with the unexpected. In his surreal universe, absurdity becomes truth, exaggeration becomes intimate, and fragility becomes monumental.

Dolores, a Cor da Sabedoria: Um Retrato do Futuro

IVONE MACHADO

On 22 May, opened  “Dolores—the Colour of Wisdom: a Portrait of the Future,” Ivone Machado's first Lisbon solo exhibition.

From 22 May to 14 June, the artist herself hosted guests, presenting a collection of realistic yet forward-glancing watercolours that imagine female ageing in 2051, the year in which Ivone will turn eighty. Her work celebrated the strength, resilience and layered experience that time grants, challenging the clichés that still cling to age.
