Juan Escauriaza

Juan Escauriaza was born in Madrid in 1961. He has devoted himself exclusively to painting since 1994. His practice centres on the urban landscape, with particular attention to architecture, light and the details of everyday life that tend to go unnoticed.

His frequent visits to the United States have informed his exploration of cities on both the East and West Coasts. He develops compositions in which recognisable places reveal unexpected relationships between geometry, colour and space.

His solo exhibitions include those held at King’s Fine Arts in New York in 2005; Jameson Gallery in Portland, Maine, in 2006; and Galería Jorge Alcolea in Madrid. In 2009, a retrospective at Casa de Vacas del Retiro was sponsored by Madrid City Council. He has exhibited at CK Contemporary in San Francisco, where he presented Setting the Scene in 2022, and at Carver Hill Gallery in Camden, Maine, in 2019. In Lisbon, he presented Um Diálogo com a Cidade at Ocupart in 2017. His more recent solo exhibitions include those held at Materna y Herencia in Madrid in 2023 and at Galerie Catherine et Frédéric Portal in Saint Jean de Luz in 2023 and 2026.

Highlights of his group exhibitions include Urbes, Paisajes Contemporáneos at the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern in Barcelona, from September 2024 to January 2025, and Lucent at Carver Hill Gallery in 2024. In 2026, his work is included in the exhibition celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Carver Hill Gallery in Camden, Maine, USA. He has also participated in international art fairs in Madrid, San Francisco, New York, London, Hong Kong and Seoul.

His work has been the subject of texts by writers and critics including Edward Lucie-Smith, Carl Little, Sarah Schmerler and Kenneth Baker, and has featured in publications on contemporary painting.
